In a remarkable reversal Dr. Stanley Plotkin, the so-called “Godfather” of the U.S. vaccine program, and his colleagues recently admitted in the New England Journal of Medicine that childhood vaccines have not been properly studied, either before and after their approval. Historically, vaccine proponents claimed that vaccines were the most thoroughly tested products, with Dr. Paul Offit even calling them the safest and best-tested substances. However, Plotkin now acknowledges that prelicensure trials have limited sample sizes and follow-up durations, and there are no dedicated resources for post-authorization safety studies.
