The United Kingdom serves as a cautionary example of how the criminalization of speech can progress towards “thought crimes” and even criminalizing prayers. These developments should alarm anyone who values free expression. Once a government begins to criminalize speech, it can quickly lead to widespread censorship. Definitions of hate speech or “malicious communications” are often subjective, leading to an ongoing expansion of what is considered prohibited speech, including certain words and gestures.
In the U.S., it’s tempting to dismiss these European legal actions due to our First Amendment protections. Yet, there is a rising trend in the U.S. to adopt similar European-style regulations. Notably, figures like Hillary Clinton have advocated for European governments to pressure Twitter into censoring users. Additionally, there have been pushes from some Democratic members for legislation that could specifically target right-wing groups based on their beliefs. If the UK’s approach to prosecutions is upheld, the survival of free speech in the Western world will be in greater doubt.
